Not-Medical

Not Medical Advice

How often do we see the phrase, “This is not medical advice” – Perhaps far more often than we read, “This is medical advice”!

This is a discussion of why we felt we needed a factsheet to help prescribers understand some of the links between much prescribed pharmaceuticals and depletion of various nutrients.

This is a subject that has been much studied and much written about, yet finding the information using a search engine seems far harder than we might expect.

It is a fact that the more prescriptions people have the sooner they die. Perhaps, that is nothing at all to be surprised about, as the healthiest people tend not be prescribed any pharmaceuticals, while very old and very frail people tend to be prescribe many.

More prescriptions = More deaths is a big generalization on a population scale and there will be millions of exceptions, such as people who never have a prescription then suddenly die and those on perhaps 15 prescriptions who live well into their 90’s.

We suggest that it is worth asking, “How often does an effect from a first prescription lead on to a second prescription and so on?” Okay, so, no one knows, but then how many people are looking out for, monitoring and reporting side-effects to minimize risks from ‘poly-pharmacy’?

We have created our double-sided A4 factsheet as an introduction to this subject, linking to a reference page that will make further investigations easier than relying on a basic search engine.
